Encouraging young girls to engage with STEM activities has never been more important in our society than it is today. At Bromley High, girls as young as 4 are introduced to programming through systematic and developmental processes that will capture their imagination and creativity at a young age.

Our youngest students learn to use and apply the term ‘Algorithm’ to many situations from sequencing a recipe to decorating a Christmas tree! In Year 1 they progress to planning their own algorithms to code an activity using 2Simple’s Purple Mash software. Being able to select a background and have ownership over their planned designs, makes the actions that much more exciting to them when they code the fairy to fly across the screen or the Angel to make an important announcement!

The selection of activities shown above have been programmed by Year 1 and demonstrate their own ideas to control onscreen characters when clicked with a mouse. Next term they will progress to using keyboard keys to trigger actions and make decisions about what happens when two objects collide….usually this involves some comical sound effects!
