As part of our Mini Minerva Lecture programme, Dr Gu from Kings College London visited Year 6 pupils to speak about cardiac imaging and show them the process of scanning a human heart. Some pupils even went home with a scanned image of their own heart!
Dr Gu is a NIHR Clinical Lecturer and Higher Specialist Scientist in Cardiac Imaging based at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals and King’s College London. He was nominated for British Heart Foundation Rising Star Award in 2018 and awarded Investigator of the Year by British Society of Echocardiography consecutively in 2017 and 2018. His main research focus is on non-invasive measure of myocardial mechanics using echocardiography and central pressure assessments. He is currently working on integration of clinical echocardiography services with the Clinical Research Facility to incorporate the novel marker into standard clinical practice. This integration will potentially have huge impact on improvement of early diagnosis of heart failure and patient outcomes.
‘The cardiology lecture was an amazing experience. It gave me a taste of the different jobs you can do in a hospital. I even got a real scan of my heart!’Year 6 pupil
