Year 12 mathematicians delivered their final Masterclass of the year to the extremely excited Year 5 Bromley High School pupils and other Year 5 students from other schools.
The topic of discussion was Number in Nature. Commencing with the concept of limits of sequences, pupils explored the Golden Ratio, a number intricately connected to nature yet often misunderstood. The group delved into the reasons why this number is captivating and examined various instances of its presence. Their investigation encompassed Fibonacci sequence numbers, which were linked to the arrangement and number of petals in flowers. The pupils discovered that when observing a sunflower, by counting the clockwise and counterclockwise spirals reaching the outer edge, one typically encounters a pair of numbers from the Fibonacci sequence. This phenomenon also holds true for pine cones.
Additionally, the Junior pupils studied the presence of a golden spiral within a rectangle. At the conclusion of the session, all students were presented with certificates of attendance.
