Congratulations to Year 10 pupil Francesca for securing a place in the Chineke Junior Orchestra, a prestigious youth orchestra comprising Black and ethnically diverse players aged between 11 and 22.

Working closely with its sister ensemble The Chineke Orchestra, both ensembles were founded simultaneously in 2015 with the aim to be a catalyst for change by increasing the representation of Black and ethnically diverse musicians in British and European orchestras.

Francesca secured her place as a violinist in the Chineke Junior Orchestra through an audition process involving the submission of a video recording showcasing two contrasting musical pieces. She also participated in a Chineke residential course, an experience that proved both exhilarating and challenging, fostering friendships with peers from around the globe. Francesca is delighted to have been accepted into the orchestra for another year!

Her first rehearsal is scheduled for August 5th at the esteemed Dulwich College, where she will spend a week rehearsing with a full-scale orchestra, supported by senior Chineke musicians. The inaugural concert will be held at Fairfield Halls in Croydon on August 10th, followed by another performance at the Southbank Centre in London on August 11th.

The repertoire for these concerts will include works by the renowned British composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor.
