Congratulations to six Year 12 mathematicians who have been selected to take part in Mathematics Masterclasses throughout February and March, organised by The Royal Institution and the University of Kent.
The Royal Institution Mathematics Masterclass programme opens young people’s eyes to the diversity of mathematics. Through a series of extra-curricular workshops, our pupils will join students all over the UK meet to explore the subjects in new and exciting ways. The programme will allow them to gain a deeper understanding of the scope, creativity, relevance and potential applications of these far-reaching subjects.
Year 12 pupils Elizabeth Czachowski-Celis, Annabel Smith, Shannon Menteath, Evelyn Davis, Isobel Brown and Sasha Davey will meet a range of speakers, giving them insight into possible STEM careers. Topics will include Clinical Trials and Data Science, Alternating Sign Matrices and Square Ice and Google’s Page Rank Algorithm.
During the two Masterclasses, I enjoyed learning how maths can be applied to situations outside of the classroom. This included how statistics can be used to ensure that clinical trials are carried out effectively. I found this to be particularly interesting as it is very relevant to current scientific research and the development of the Covid-19 vaccine. Isobel, Sixth Former
