Current and prospective Sixth Form English students had the opportunity to welcome Dr Joe Jackson from the University of Nottingham and hear his talk on the meaning and definition of English Literature and how it informs contemporary conversations about race and nationhood.
Students found that his talk challenged and expanded their ideas about what it means to study English Literature as they discovered that to engage with the subject is to influence the very society they inhabit.
“It was interesting to learn about how language contributes to the divisions in our society and what defines the contemporary genre in English Literature. It gave me an opportunity to reflect on the power of the written word and how future Literature can influence the presentation of race and nationhood.”Emily, English student
