At the beginning of this year, Sixth Form students enthusiastically began their various chosen Darwin Electives, including Textiles and Hairdressing.

The Darwin Elective Programme is designed to broaden students’ education by offering a diverse range of skills and experiences that prepare them for lifelong learning beyond their A level subjects. This initiative aims to extend knowledge, inspire higher education choices, and promote personal development.

In the newly launched Textiles elective, students mastered straight and curved stitching on brand-new sewing machines. They practiced threading the machines and sewing their names onto fabric. This week, they focused on safely pinning seams and even mended trousers for the Junior Forest School – a remarkable achievement for beginners. Meanwhile, Nerin creatively cut pattern pieces for a Zelda cosplay outfit, blending imagination with practical skills.

In the hairdressing elective, students enjoyed an exciting introduction to twisting and braiding techniques. They practiced creating 2, 3, 4, and 5-strand twists and braids, developing foundational hairstyling skills. In the coming weeks, they will build on these techniques by learning to create a fishtail braid and exploring more advanced styles.

Through these electives, students not only enhance their skill sets but also build confidence and explore passions that may shape their academic and career paths, fostering a genuine love for lifelong learning.
