The silver DofE group completed their practice expedition last weekend after a week of intensive route planning and preparation.
The first day’s hike from Hailsham to Seaford involved some navigational skill and covered a variety of terrain; day two was a more straightforward Downs walk taking them up and over Firle Beacon.
Congratulations to the 43 girls who completed the challenge successfully and will now be preparing for the qualifying expedition in early October.
“Although parts of our silver DofE expedition were challenging, it was a good experience and allowed us to get a better idea of how to approach the actual expedition. After a good first evening at the campsite to ease us in, we had an early start on Saturday morning to begin the first day of walking. The route on the first day was particularly challenging, often ending up in seemingly endless fields, but with some help from other groups and teachers at checkpoints, we made it to the next campsite. Luckily for us the second day was easier to navigate, and we were able to stop at the viewpoint for lunch with some of the other groups. Overall, apart from being chased by sheep, the expedition was very enjoyable and was a great opportunity to work together with friends differently from in school.”Cara, Year 11 pupil
