To celebrate Science Week 2024, Junior and Senior pupils had the opportunity to participate in various workshops dedicated to science, technology, engineering and maths.

The festivities kicked off with Sixth Form students wowing everyone with a hair-raising assembly showcasing the wonders of static electricity.

Throughout the week, pupils took part in many activities. Pupils from Year 3 to Year 6 delved into workshops led by civil engineer Yennifer DaSilva. Her insights into her work on Hs2 inspired the girls to ponder engineering solutions for real-world problems. Selected Year 5 pupils also participated in The Royal Institution’s GDST Junior Science Day.

Excursions added an extra layer of excitement. On Tuesday, Year 5 pupils embarked on a field trip to the Science Museum in London, delving into space exploration. They enjoyed an interactive show, “Mission to Space,” led by Jin, exploring the sun’s surface area compared to everyday objects. The trip offered phenomenal insights into astronauts and gravitational forces, with Mrs. Fuller’s Earth costume adding a touch of humour!

“We also tested different rockets that went wrong in the past. This was intriguing. It allowed us to fully understand all the manufacturing errors and the lack of resources they had at the time.”Isabella-Grace, Year 5 pupil

The Junior School also enjoyed ‘Playground Science’, utilising science equipment to investigate various phenomena.

Meanwhile, Year 7 and 8 pupils immersed themselves in practical challenges, from crafting Mars landers to designing and sending a parcel to safeguard a lone Pringle from breakage – a suspenseful experiment with results eagerly anticipated. The whole Senior School also took part in a competition to design their own element.
