On Tuesday 29th
January we had the pleasure of welcoming Dr Joe Jackson, Assistant Professor in Twentieth-Century and Contemporary English Literature at the University of Nottingham. Dr Jackson posed the thought-provoking question: ‘What is English about English Literature?’ prompting us to reflect on its origins in Anglo-Saxon England to the literature of the modern day.
Dr Jackson explored what made English
Literature “English” and by extension what it meant for an individual to be
“British”, thereby covering a range of pertinent issues surrounding the idea of the nation and national identity.
It was a fascinating and academically stimulating talk as part of Bromley High’s Minerva Lectures, captivating our students and resulting in further classroom debate.
