Bromley High School’s youngest pupils recently embarked on an exhilarating journey into the world of robotics with Eduthing.
Pupils in Year 1 and 2 classes were introduced to the fascinating concept of robots as programmed machines, not living beings and discovered the diverse ways they can be controlled in a workshop led by Eduthing. The day was filled with hands-on exploration and demonstrations. The highlight for many of the girls was meeting the incredible K1 Robosen Robot, which performed amazing backflips and handstands, responding to voice commands from pupils!
“We learnt that we could tell the robots what to do with colours or using our voice!”Saisha, Year 2 pupil
The pupils also delved into the world of the Indi Bot, using its colour sensor to navigate a colourful tile track. They discovered the power of app-based control, further expanding their understanding of robotic programming. ‘Martina’, the Marty Robot, showcased the magic of visual programming with Scratch Jr., kicking a football into a goal and demonstrating the precision of coded instructions.
The Intellino Train followed instructions from coloured tiles, changing speed and direction based on the sensor input, and the Ohbot, controlled by Scratch programming, brought a unique element to the workshop. The girls were thrilled as the Ohbot responded to them, using Artificial Intelligence to create a song about their favourite animals.
“It was the best day ever because all the robots did different things and it was so exciting!” Year 2 pupil
The workshop successfully ignited a spark of curiosity and enthusiasm for robotics among the young students, laying a foundation for future STEM exploration.
“This workshop gave our pupils confidence in STEM. They saw robots that carry out a range of functions, understanding they are designed for various tasks. Providing experiences like today for our younger girls is so important in supporting their knowledge of how and why technology is important in our lives.”Mrs Shallcross, EdTech and Innovation Consultant Teacher & Head of Computing (Junior School)
