As we approach half term, my thoughts turn to The Promised Land by Barack Obama, where he talks about the season of spring. We are soon to welcome a new season when the grass gets greener, the days get longer with more daylight appearing, and colour starts to return in nature.

With new beginnings in mind, our Year 9 and Year 11 girls are engaging in their options process, choosing which subjects to study at GCSE and A level.  Together, the school, parents and girls are working to decide the best subjects for them to study. This is an exciting opportunity for them to reflect on their future aspirations and the pathways that they will take to their next stage of education.  At Bromley High School, we offer a distinctive curriculum of great breadth and depth delivered by specialist experts, enabling the girls to reach their full potential.

The ‘pursuit of knowledge’ comes from the Greek word ‘Methodos’. Fostering a love of learning, as opposed to simply operating as an examinations factory, is a core aim of the school. In this sense, potential represents our girls learning new things, adopting a passion for learning and a desire to learn just for learning’s sake. Our core value of curiosity demonstrates this motivating force and enriches student engagement.

My advice to all our pupils who are considering their options at this time, is to choose where your passions lie. Consider your next steps and your potential future pathway, but also ponder on the quotes below when making your final choices. Please remember that your teachers are here to help and advise you.

Helen Keller – Knowledge is love and light and vision
Albert Einstein – The pursuit of knowledge is more valuable than its possession
George Bernard Shaw – What we want is to see the child in pursuit of knowledge, and not knowledge in pursuit of the child
