On Monday, the finals of the House Debating Competition took place.

The first rounds of the annual house debating competition showcased exceptional talent and enthusiasm. Each house collaborated across year groups to develop intricate arguments for their motions. Elmfield faced Fernbank on the motion, “This house believes that children should be required by law to look after their parents in old age.” Meanwhile, Speldhurst debated Oakdene on the topic, “This house believes that university education in the UK should be free.”

After intense discussions, Elmfield and Oakdene emerged victorious in their respective rounds. As one pupil noted, “Debating teaches us to think critically and express ourselves confidently.”

In the final, the two motions were “This house believes reading a book is better than watching the film” and “This house believes social media should be banned for those under 16.” Congratulations to Elmfield, the winners of House Debating 2024!
