Bromley High School’s Eco-Committee are spearheading a wave of sustainable initiatives to make a positive impact on our planet. Last term, the school buzzed with activity as pupils, parents, and staff joined forces in our Zero Waste Week.

The week began with a surge of generosity as members of the school community donated over 60 items of old technology to Community TechAid. This initiative not only diverted electronic waste from landfills but also provided valuable resources to bridge the digital divide for those in need.

The Eco-Committee organised a compelling assembly in the Senior School, shedding light on the issue of food waste. Pupils and staff were educated about the environmental impact of food waste. Later that week, the entire school community embraced sustainable practices by participating in ‘No Power Hour’ and ‘Photocopy Free Friday.’ Teachers opted for ‘No Power Hour,’ engaging in learning activities without electricity. Meanwhile, others chose ‘Photocopy Free Friday,’ reducing paper usage by limiting photocopying.

A Junior School pupil shared, “I really enjoyed learning without power. We didn’t use power, but the learning we did was powerful.”

The pinnacle of the week’s events was the Food Waste Friday House Competition held during Senior School lunch. House Captains meticulously monitored lunch waste, and the House with the lowest amount of waste emerged victorious. The impact was profound, with total waste reduced to just 30kg compared to the previous day’s 72.5kg.

Through these initiatives, Bromley High pupils demonstrated their unwavering commitment to sustainability and community welfare. As stewards of the environment, they are paving the way for a greener and more sustainable future.
