Top Up Swim Week 2024 took place at our Bromley High School pool was an outstanding success, transforming nervous swimmers into confident ones!
Held during the first week of private schools’ summer holidays, we welcomed state schools to our superb facilities. Planning began in January, with invitations sent to Year 5 and 6 students who hadn’t yet met the National Curriculum swim targets, including swimming 25 meters proficiently, using various strokes, and performing safe self-rescue.
This year, 150 swimmers from 11 schools, including one SEND school, arrived on their first 1, anxious yet eager. A baseline assessment grouped them into small classes, averaging six students per class, each led by two experienced teachers in the water, providing reassurance and support.
Throughout the week, swimmers honed core aquatic skills such as aquatic breathing and streamlining. They improved their strokes and increased their swimming distances. By the final day, they had mastered deep water skills and essential water safety techniques, crucial as they prepared for secondary school and summer activities.
Each swimmer received a water safety certificate, which they proudly took home. The week concluded with all swimmers showing remarkable progress, many achieving their swim targets. Schools received detailed progress reports, with many already booking for next year.
