Book Week at Bromley High School was a fantastic celebration packed with inspiring events, pupil leadership opportunities, and exciting initiatives that brought together pupils, staff, and parents in our shared love of the written word.
Junior School Highlights
In the Junior School, the week began with a special assembly featuring messages from authors and celebrities, who shared their love of reading and recommended their favourite books. The excitement continued with the launch of an outdoor reading box, giving pupils the chance to enjoy stories during playtime.
The pastoral quiz encouraged teamwork and friendly competition as mixed-age teams tested their book knowledge. A special moment was when members of the Year 6 librarian team visited a local care home, bringing joy to residents with costumes and storytelling.
Other highlights included a costume parade, where pupils dressed as their favourite book characters, and inspiring author visits that sparked creativity. The ‘Bringing Books to Life’ art workshop allowed pupils to explore storytelling through art, while ‘Drop Everything and Read’ sessions encouraged everyone to enjoy a good book.
A fun ‘Whose Nose is in the Book?’ trail had pupils guessing the teacher behind the book, and classes collaborated to create book-themed balloon lanterns to decorate the library. The BHPA hosted a charity book drive and supported the travelling book fair, giving pupils more chances to discover new reads. Teachers also took part in a book swap, sharing their favourite books with colleagues – because a love of reading is for everyone!
Senior School Highlights
Year 7 and 8 pupils went on a hunt for famous first lines of books dotted around the school in order to complete their ‘Guess the Book’ quiz. They also got the chance to write their own first lines, which will hopefully form the inspiration for their own famous novels one day!
Year 9 pupils enjoyed a movie hour where they got the chance to watch the winning book trailers based on the books in their book boxes. It was a fantastic chance to see the wonderful texts they read go from page to stage.
Year 10 pupils took things in a different direction with their Poetry Slam. Many of our pupils enjoy reading poetry books, and these poems certainly came to life in powerful and emotive ways.
English Sixth Form pupils got a taste of university life by attending an online lecture on A Streetcar Named Desire. The pupils discussed different ways to read a text and the various interpretations that can be yielded depending on one’s critical lens.
The whole Senior School participated in the House Character Dress-up competition, and there were certainly some excellent costumes on display!
The Junior & Senior Schools Celebrate Together!
This year, the school aimed to spread the joy of reading even further with an exciting whole-school book postcards initiative. Pupils and staff had the opportunity to share their favourite reads by writing book recommendations on beautifully pupil-designed postcards, which were then passed to friends across the school. The initiative was a huge success, sparking book discussions and encouraging everyone to discover new stories.
For the first time this year, a joint Year 6 and Year 7 author visit was held with esteemed children’s author Lisa Williamson, who captivated the pupils with her stories.
The entire Bromley High School community dressed up as their favourite book characters to raise funds for the World Book Day charity, and it was wonderful to see even older pupils dressed as the Hungry Caterpillar and Gandalf!
“Overall, Book Week at Bromley High School was a truly memorable celebration of literature, creativity, and community, leaving everyone inspired and excited to continue their reading journeys.”Mrs Kasza-Martin-Hicks & Mrs Christie, English Teachers
