‘Where the Crawdads Sing’ by Delia Owens
Where the Crawdads Sing is a captivating and beautifully written novel of mystery, prejudice, romance, and nature. The characters are well-developed and relatable, with the main character, Kya standing out as a particularly strong and resilient protagonist.
Set in the early 1950s, Kya lives in a shack amongst the marshes on the North Carolina coast. After being abandoned by her family, Kya learns to fend for herself which is both captivating and heartbreaking. Known by locals as the ‘Marsh Girl’, Kya’s coming-of-age tale is told as flashbacks and is intertwined with a mysterious death making it a compelling read.
I thoroughly enjoyed Where the Crawdads Sing and highly recommend it for its thought-provoking storytelling and unexpected twists! Due to some of the mature content I would recommend it for Year 10 readers and above.
“If anyone comes, don’t go in the house. They can get ya there. Run deep in the marsh, hide in the bushes. Always cover yo’ tracks; I learned ya how.” Where the Crawdads Sing
