For our Alumna of the Month interview, we spoke to Emma Wright (nee Piercy), author of newly released book ‘How Do You Stop A Magpie Mobbing Your Mind?’
Emma joined Bromley High School in 1996 and left in 2003, after studying A-level German, French, Biology, Chemistry. She achieved a First Class degree in German and French from The University of Exeter.
Please can you briefly describe your current role?
I am an author, my latest book is a young adult novel. It is a story of bereavement, recovery and the power of nature to heal, and draws on my own experiences of having and recovering from an eating disorder.
With an engaging plot, bewitching descriptions of nature and some comedy thrown in for good measure, it should be highly appealing to Bromley High School students!
How did Bromley High School help shape your future career?
I have always loved writing since I was small, and Bromley High School helped me to hone my writing skills and empowered me to express myself creatively.
What aspects of Bromley High School did you most enjoy, and find most rewarding?
I was quite studious, and always enjoyed expanding my mind. I particularly loved learning languages, a passion which led me to study the subject at university.
Collaborative efforts like school plays, fashion shows, drama competitions and music concerts were always hugely rewarding.
What is your favourite memory of being at Bromley High School?
I loved Sixth Form visits to Paris and Berlin, and language exchange trips to Germany. I still remember our army-themed muck-up day and the havoc we wreaked!
I have particularly fond memories of some of the devoted and knowledgeable staff which taught me and helped me when I was struggling with an eating disorder, especially Mrs Muchajer, Mrs. Weston, Mrs. Dolan and Dr. Trotter.
