For our Alumna of the Month interview, we spoke to Clare Skinner who features in the new national government campaign, Look into my eyes, which includes hospital staff urging people to stay at home during the national lockdown.

Clare studied at Bromley High School between 2005 and 2012, and now works as an Emergency Doctor in the Basingstoke and North Hampshire hospital.

Please briefly describe your current role
I work as a junior doctor in the Emergency Department, assessing and treating patients who attend the department in need of urgent medical help, or who are brought to hospital by ambulance crews. This can range from minor injuries to patients who are critically unwell.

How did Bromley High School help shape your future career?
Bromley High School’s small class sizes and encouraging atmosphere gave me the confidence to aim high, and especially to choose to pursue academic subjects in the STEM sector. The school also supported me through every step of my university application, providing mock interviews and pastoral support.

Bromley High undoubtedly helped me realise my academic potential, and I am sure I would not have had the confidence to apply to medical school without the brilliant education I received.

What aspects of Bromley High School did you most enjoy, and find most rewarding?
I enjoyed the brilliant sporting and performing arts facilities, multiple educational trips abroad, and making friends for life.

What is your favourite memory of being at Bromley High School?
It has to be the annual Christmas assemblies. I hope they still happen!

What value do you get out of your connections with your fellow alumnae?
My friends from Bromley High remain my best friends to this day. We have taken similar paths in the medical sector and are a constant source of support to each other.

How have you benefited from being part of the wider GDST community?
I was able to use the alumnae network to make networking connections while still at the school, both to contact medical students at the time and working doctors to pursue work experience and seek professional contacts.
