For our Alumna of the Month interview, we spoke to Blessing Biokoro, Graduate Software Engineer at Vodafone Group.
Blessing joined Bromley High School in 2011 and left in 2019. She studied A level Psychology, English Literature and Business and has an undergraduate degree in BSc Computer Science from the University of Essex.
Please can you briefly describe your current role?
As a Graduate Software Engineer at Vodafone Group, my responsibilities revolve around developing, designing, and managing projects for business solutions. This involves utilising various programming languages, databases, operating systems, and cloud engineering. I’ve had the exciting opportunity to represent Vodafone as a graduate at tech-minded events organised by Bright Network for university students.
How did Bromley High School help shape your future career?
Attending a captivating talk on Biotechnology during a Bromley High School trip to Imperial College London significantly contributed to my interest in the technology field. Additionally, pursuing Computer Science at the GCSE level, inspired by my father’s IT career, played a pivotal role in defining my career trajectory.
What aspects of Bromley High School did you most enjoy, and find most rewarding?
I thoroughly enjoyed engaging in discussions on current affairs during form time and in my current affairs elective class. These experiences enabled me to develop confidence in discussing diverse topics, a skill that has proven invaluable in my job and during interviews. Articulating ideas effectively has been crucial in fostering effective networking within the workplace.
What is your favourite memory of being at Bromley High School?
The 2019 trip to San Francisco stands out as my favourite memory from Bromley High School. Exploring the vibrant city and visiting tech giants like Google, Facebook, and the Intel Museum significantly contributed to my interest in technology and its vast possibilities.
What value do you get out of your connections with your fellow alumnae and the wider GDST community?
I had the privilege of being a speaker at the GDST’s Limitless Learning programme for sixth form students in 2021. During this session, I discussed topics such as AI, programming languages, agile methodologies, leveraging LinkedIn for work experience, and other topics. Networking with alumnae within the wider GDST community has been beneficial in various professional aspects.
