In the second week of March, pupils and staff celebrated Pi Day for the sixth successive year. Pi Day is an annual celebration of the mathematical constant π (pi) and is observed on March 14th (3/14 in the month/day format) since 3, 1, and 4 are the first three significant digits of π.
Whilst mathematics staff enjoyed eating fruit pi(e)s and wished the pupils a happy Pi Day, the Year 8 pupils were involved in reciting the number pi and making up rhymes and stories that would help them learn the number pi. The qualifying round took place online during Guided Home Learning lessons, the final round took place when pupils returned to school. Well done to the qualifying team.
The picture below shows the girls who qualified for the final after they were filmed reciting pi as part of the virtual Pi Day assembly.
The reciting of pi competition was very competitive and the mathematics department were very impressed by the large number of pupils who could recite pi to over 20 decimal places and in some cases many more! Going into the final round, Matilda was leading by reciting pi to 103 decimal places. However, in a tense finale, she was just beaten by Antonia who recited pi to 108 decimal places.
The final positions were:
1st – Antonia (108)
2nd – Matilda (103)
3rd – Giselle (100)
4th – Daisy (70)
5th – Yana (62)
6th – Frida (46)
7th – Phoebe (45)
8th – Catherine (41)
9th – Tate (38)
10th – Mary (32)
Thank you to our Sixth Form mathematics ambassadors, Alice Gigney, Isabelle Wistow and Elizabeth Czachowski- Celis for producing and delivering an informative and entertaining assembly on the topic of pi and Pi Day.
