Pupils from Years 5 and 6 joined presenters from the L’Oréal Young Scientist Centre at the Royal Institution for a third exciting virtual science workshop exploring chemical changes.

The workshop explored unexpected colour changes, surprising bangs and many more exciting chemical reactions.  Pupils looked at the periodic table of the elements, reactive metals and how to speed up chemical reactions with catalysts.

“I most enjoyed the very last experiment when the pot exploded almost with green fire. I thought that was awesome! I learnt that when baking powder and vinegar are mixed, it fizzes but it is harmless. The jelly baby experiment really surprised me, I didn’t know that a jelly baby could make such a big reaction!” Emma, Year 6

“Wow!!! That was so exciting. I loved every part but I loved the elephant toothpaste experiment the most.” Frankie, Year 6

“Dani and Gemma were so informative and it was a pleasure to take part in the Chemical Workshop! There were so many cool and almost unbelievable reactions and the hosts explained everything perfectly and understandably!! Great time and amazing workshop!” Martha, Year 6

“It was really fun watching doing some of the experiments! My favourite experiment was the last one because the fire changed colour and it was beautiful. Gemma and Dani are great at explaining and showing us the best part of science!” Sofia, Year 6

“I most of all loved the zombie flame because at first, nothing happened then gradually it started with smoke and then BOOM a big green flame shot off and there were little orange sparks! It was like a firework flame! My second favourite was the jelly baby experiment because I loved the the purple-pink colour at the bottom of the tube” Ella, Year 6
