Bromley High celebrates Oxford and US university offers

Congratulations to three Upper Sixth pupils for receiving offers from prestigious universities Oxford and Georgetown in the US.

Sophia Short,  winner of the Bromley High School Steinway Competition in 2020, and Ellen Millwood, House Captain, have received offers from Oxford University to study music and spanish respectively. Over the last two years, pupils from Bromley High have gone on to read Theology, History, Biology, Natural Sciences and English at Oxford and Cambridge, demonstrating the breadth of academic subjects our pupils study at these world-class universities.

Kessley Janvier, received an offer from top US university Georgetown in Washington.  Georgetown admissions has been extremely competitive this year, making Kessley’s achievement even more exciting. She follows in the footsteps of previous successful Sixth Formers who chose to study at other top US universities including Princeton, Yale and Rice.

Congratulations also to our music department which has been instrumental in the success of many of our leavers.  Last year, both girls who received Oxford offers to read medicine and biology studied A-level music, and in 2018 Sophie Oliver left Bromley High to study at the prestigious Royal Academy of Music.

All three girls  praised Bromley High for the high quality of teaching and support they received to help them achieve their goals.

“I have been able to achieve a life-long dream with lots of support from my friends and my teachers, especially my Spanish teacher, with extra sessions helping me prepare myself for the application and interview. I now feel I have many more opportunities to engage with and pursue my passion for Spanish, and without the support from my teachers and the school as a whole I may not have been able to do so.”

Meanwhile, a delighted Sophia said: “I was encouraged to apply to Oxford by my teachers at one of the Lower Sixth Future Focus days. It wasn’t even something I was considering until I started looking into life at Oxford itself, through attending a virtual open day then later visiting in person. I became hooked on the idea of going to Oxford through both my love of music and the university itself, which helped motivate me through each stage of the application process.

“The School’s Oxbridge programme, provided me with support with my application, such as weekly tutorials with an academic mentor for the past six months. This really helped to prepare me for each stage of the long application process – from help with my personal statement and UCAS form, to recording audition videos and carrying out mock interviews. The school also helped to organise Zoom calls with current Oxford students who talked about their own applications and university life.

“As it came closer to my actual interview date, I was given the opportunity to be part of the wider GDST Oxbridge network, through mock interviews with teachers from other GDST schools. This felt very similar to my actual interview and was the most helpful preparation for my interviews that I could have received.

“Without the opportunities Bromley High provided, I wouldn’t have been able to get an offer from such a prestigious university where I am delighted to be continuing my education.
