Yesterday our Year 12 and 13 Spanish students attended an exciting online lecture on Chilean Social Protests by Catherine Boyle, a professor from King’s College London.
Dr Boyle spoke about the effects of the Pinochet dictatorship and the protests surrounding the lack of rights for women in the 1970s and 80s, as well as other demonstrations surrounding topics such as education and repression recently in Chile. Pupils had the opportunity to watch a clip from the student protests, learning about the importance of the flash-mob dance formation and the references of Michael Jackson’s Thriller.
“It was lovely to hear a lecture spoken entirely in Spanish, improving both our listening skills and vocabulary of the topic. It was especially enriching as protests and social movements are a topic in the A-level syllabus, and we learnt many more facts and ideas surrounding this topic for our speaking exams. It was a massively rewarding and interesting lecture.”Ellen, Year 13
