Last week our Year 12 mathematicians attended an insightful virtual Maths in Action conference, hearing from five inspiring speakers from various backgrounds including engineering, finance and biology.

The main speaker Bobby Seagull, shared his personal experience of the financial crisis of 2008 from the trading floors of Lehman Brothers and explored the maths behind the most chaotic recession in a lifetime.

Sara Jabbari, a mathematician from the University of Birmingham, delivered a session on fighting disease with mathematics, looking at developing new antibiotic drugs and other new drugs to fight diseases.  Ed Southall’s session was packed with puzzles and demonstrations. Ed has taught in Education for 12 years in a variety of roles and has written several books on geometry puzzles as well as teaching and understanding maths.  Katie Steckles, a Mathematics Communicator, talked about famous mathematicians and how they are connected in time.  Rob Bennett, a Chief Inspirer at Bloodhound Education, gave an insight into their world record attempt at building a 1000mph car.

The day included a session on useful revision tips from an examiner, equipping students with the tools to succeed.
