Over the last two weekends, Bromley High School participated in two online debating competitions; three teams competed in the Saint Paul’s Girls School Women’s Open, and three teams competed in the Dulwich Schools debate.

The competitions were the first online events the debaters had experienced, therefore the format was unfamiliar.  Competition was predictably fierce and the debates as passionate as ever. Current affairs, newsworthy items, hot topics and controversies featured in full days of conversation, argument and contention.

After all was said and done, the Saint Paul’s debaters acquitted themselves admirably in a field of a hundred girls. The three Bromley teams came 8th, 10th and 15th out of a field of 48 teams, all the Bromley speakers finished in the top third, and they had the 3rd, 9th and 12th placed speakers. The Dulwich competitors were also successful, having a team finish in the top 20 of a field of prestigious schools, and speakers finishing in the top third.

Students from Years 10 and 11 found it a very enjoyable experience, and a great way to kick off the debating season.
