This week saw the launch of Black History Month at Bromley High School.

Our dedicated Diversity Committee have spent months working on their assembly for this event, which focused both on the origins of Black History Month in the USA and Britain, and on the work of Dr Miranda Kaufmann and her exploration of ‘Black Tudors’.

The students discussed the lives of John Blanke, a royal musician, and Cattalena, who made her home in Gloucestershire, as examples of a black presence in Britain long before the period of mass immigration. Students have also been invited to screenings of Professor Olivette Otele’s ‘European African’ talk at the Chelsea History Festival, and students from all years have been inspired by the portraits of Black British women which have been posted around the school to complete the Knowledge Trail competition.

We are delighted that Professor David Olusoga, whose book on ‘Black and British’ has been re-released for a younger audience, will be visiting our school next term.
