Last weekend, a number of our debaters headed for LSE for their annual debating competition. As ever, the LSE motions were varied and interesting, the first being, ‘This house would allow parents to remove their children from specific classes at school eg. sport, RS, sex education on moral, religious or political grounds and we were delighted when we discovered three of our teams came first. After a well-earned pizza lunch break the round two motion came through; ‘This house believes that the Oscars awards categories should be gender neutral ‘ where again we had first and second places. The third and final round before the final was arguably more technical, ‘This house believes that countries should fund nuclear energy development over buying fossil fuels.’ Again our debaters performed well with first and second places.
We were particularly delighted however when one of our novice teams, Aimee and Grace in Year 10 made it to the final and top of the leader board for novice teams against 34 other schools including debating heavy weights such as St Pauls Girls, Whitgift, Laytmers, Westminster and Brighton College. So high were their scores that they skipped the novice final and took part in the overall final which was an incredibly close debate.
Well done to all our fantastic debaters and good luck in the forthcoming Cambridge Schools and ESU Mace competitions taking place next week.
