Year 9 pupil Eshal and Mila took part in the Fourth Plinth competition and have reached the finals thanks to heir artwork.

The Fourth Plinth Schools Awards is a chance for schools to get creative and produce a work of art inspired by the contemporary art commissions for Trafalgar Square’s Fourth Plinth.

Among 2000 applicants, their work stood out, earning them a coveted spot in London’s City Hall exhibition, with the prize awaiting from none other than the London Mayor, Sadiq Khan.

Their submission for the Monuments project reflected their deep contemplation on the legacies embedded in public spaces. They could choose a person or creature they feel deserves a monument, coming up with diverse and highly personal responses. Here is an insight into their thoughtful ideas:

Eshal’s ceramic piece, a homage to David Attenborough, symbolised advocacy for the natural world, adorned with intricate details crafted with clay and stamps, showcasing her commitment to environmental awareness.

Mila’s tribute took a poignant turn, immortalizing Laika, the first animal in space. Her ceramic monument honoured the sacrifice of the courageous dog, shedding light on the lesser-known consequences of early space exploration.

We look forward to the winners’ announcement in late April!
