It was a pleasure to welcome Ronan McAdam, Imperial College, London’s Grantham Institute
The lecture gave students and staff an insight into the collaborative nature of research across a number of disciplines. The long term nature of data collection was also apparent. Regarding plastics in the ocean unfortunately the story appears to be even more concerning than we had previously thought. Most of us were aware of items of plastic harming animals such as plastic straws stuck in the nostrils of tortoises. The lecture gave us further insight into the microscopic and nanoscopic plastic particles which are becoming integral to ocean water and even rivers. Did we arrive at a solution? Unfortunately not, however where exactly we dispose of our plastic waste is and its final destination has a direct impact upon ocean pollution and we are also mindful of the importance of reducing plastic packaging which is its greatest and most unnecessary use.
Ronan’s conclusion was ‘getting educated’ is the most important action each of us can begin o take, which is exactly what this lecture has provided for the students and staff of Bromley High.
