Throughout both Junior and Senior Schools, this week has been dedicated to Book Week 2024, featuring a variety of thrilling events and activities fostering literary appreciation.
To launch our Book Week celebrations, popular author, Ross Welford, came to talk to pupils in the Junior and Senior Schools. Known for works including “Time Travelling with a Tortoise” and “The 1,000 Year Old Boy,” discussed his writing influences, such as his love for magical tales and science. Pupils participated in interactive creative writing activities, entertained by Ross’s magic tricks. Meeting Ross in person, students received signed copies of his books, creating lasting memories of the visit.
Pupils from both schools gathered in the Junior and Senior School Halls to participate in a Masked Reader Competition, guessing which teachers were reading books aloud from behind various strange and unusual masks, including a llama, pigeon, fish, and even E.T! A huge thank you to all our fantastic teachers who participated in the competition.
In the Senior School, the English Department launched a reading lounge which will run on alternative Monday lunchtimes moving forwards. Students were able to bring a book, read and relax with Mrs Carrington amongst book themed beanbags, blankets and music. A calm and mindful time was had by all!
Over the course of this year, Year 9 have been participating in the English department reading scheme, and have recently created video trailers for the books which they have been reading. During form time on Wednesday, they had the opportunity to watch and enjoy videos from each of the five English classes.
During form time on Wednesday Year 7 students wrote postcards, featuring art made by Bromley High students, to our Year 6 offer-holders who will be joining us in September. Our Year 7s introduced themselves, welcomed their Year 6 buddies to Bromley High, and recommended a book for Book Week.
Sixth Form English students donned a range of literary costumes, including the Queen of Hearts and Shakespeare’s Juliet. Year 7 and 8 students then spent lunch and break time completing a quiz trying to guess as many of the characters as they could!
Librarians Mrs Dowie and Mrs Corke also ran a series of games and activities in Year 7 and 8 reading lessons to mark Book Week, created a display of dyslexia-friendly books in order to further promote amongst all students, and gave a wonderful Book Week assembly on Monday.
The Bromley High Parents’ Association (BHPA) organised a Book Drive, gathering over 1,50+ books donated by the school community for the Acorn Book Club, striving to provide every child with quality books. They also raised £1,105 for the charity.
Book Week celebrations wouldn’t be complete without the annual dress-up competition, with Junior School pupils coming to school dressed as a their favourite book character taking part in a costume parade!
