Safer Internet Day is the UK’s biggest celebration of online safety. Each year, the event covers an online issue or theme that resonates with the experiences of young people online.

Created in consultation with young people across the UK, this year’s Safer Internet Day focused on change online. This encompassed:

  • Young people’s perspective on new and emerging technology
  • Utilising the internet to enact positive change
  • Desired changes young people want to see online
  • Factors that can influence and shape young people’s behavior both online and offline.

In the Junior School, the Digital Leaders presented an assembly and introduced a competition for KS2 to design a positive online influencer, and for KS1 to design an online safety poster. The winners will be announced next week.

As part of our PSHE curriculum, Year 3 to Year 6 pupils participated in a workshop from BIGFOOT Arts Education titled “Caught in the Cybernet”. The drama and role-play experience provided a powerful visualisation of an online bullying situation. The girls enjoyed engaging in role-playing exercises, demonstrating a solid understanding of how to resolve such situations and when to report to a trusted adult.

“I liked the facts that they gave and they had asked other children about their experiences so now I know how to block and protect myself better online.”Ariana, Year 5 pupil

The workshop reinforced these messages:

  1. Understand: Behind every screen is a person.
  2. Think: How might they be feeling?
  3. Take action: Say sorry.

Please continue the conversation at home with your daughter and reinforce these 5 top tips from the workshop.

  • Be Kind to each other
  • Always get consent
  • Look out for others
  • Filter out the negative
  • Protect your reputation

“The experience was so interactive, and I learned so much about what to do if you are cyberbullied.”Liyana, Year 5 pupil
