The Junior School has successfully cultivated a tech-forward mindset among its students, offering engaging opportunities to explore future careers. Bromley High School’s EdTech and Innovation Consultant teacher, Mrs Sam Shallcross continues to collaborate with organisations to host events that spotlight female role models in the tech industry and career opportunities.
These events have included a virtual Christmas STEM quiz for Year 3 hosted by TechSheCan; Digital Leaders presenting a TechSheCan assembly demonstrating the various career choices available with technology in sports; a Micro:bit MakeCode gaming event for Year 4 highlighting the creative jobs in the gaming industry; and the Digital Leaders researching and celebrating women in technology during Black History Month.
In a mission to inspire others, Bromley High School also partnered with local primary schools through the SHINE project and hosted a collaborative workshop on Smart Cars. This involved a robotics workshop and a virtual presentation from a female software engineer about her career in the automated car industry.
More recently, Year 6 had a live event with TechSheCan, exploring Generative AI and its role in medical and creative industries. They had to consider the reliability of the technology and how a thoughtful approach involving critical thinking and analysis is required when utilizing the ideas generated from AI. They recognized the impact it will have on industries and professions and began to consider ways to prepare for an AI future.
At this young age, students are enthusiastic about the technology around them and eager to develop their creative skills, assisted by technology. However, as the digital world rapidly evolves, it has become increasingly important to not only teach students how to use technology safely and responsibly but also how it will affect their futures and the career choices they make.
“The events we host reinforce our commitment to preparing students for tech-driven futures that are yet unknown.”Mrs Shallcross, EdTech and Innovation Consultant Teacher & Head of Junior Computing
