During the half term break, Year 11 and 12 pupils embarked on a five day adventure to Sicily. From Catania to Taormina, they created cherished memories with their classmates.

Upon their arrival at Catania airport, the group of 35, despite their fatigue from the 3am start, was brimming with excitement for the next five days. They quickly boarded their coach and ventured into Catania center with their first guide, Alessia. Here, they delved into the town’s history, discovering traditional Italian breakfast delights like granita and cannoli. They also learned about the symbolic elephant of the regional capital. Following a coach journey, they reached their base camp for the trip, Hotel Kennedy.

The second day demanded an early start, with breakfast at 6:30am, a necessity for the stunning Mount Etna excursion. Accompanied by their second guide, Julia, they ascended via cable car to 2500m, followed by a 500m climb on a specialized vehicle. The views were breathtaking, and they reached one of the five craters, learning that Mount Etna had never taken a human life and was revered as a motherly guardian by Sicilians. After their descent, they explored a gorge, donning wetsuits and life jackets to swim, jump, and navigate rocky streams.

Day three was packed with activity, beginning with an early start, followed by a ferry journey to the Aeolian islands. There, they conquered the massive Vulcano, enjoying panoramic views and learning about volcano monitoring. The day concluded with sweet treats from a local shop and a ferry ride back to the hotel.

Day four began with an early breakfast and an educational tour of Siracusa, including a visit to Dionysus’ Ear, an underground cave, and a delightful Sicilian puppet show. The group also explored the only place in Europe where papyrus grows naturally.

Their last day was a mixture of sadness and fun as they visited Taormina, shopped for last-minute gifts, and explored an ancient Sicilian theater. Finally, they headed to the airport for their journey home, grateful for the incredible experience and the hard work of the staff who made it all possible.

“I had a really good time exploring Sicily. I think we all agreed that the trek up to the summit of the volcano on Vulcano Island was our favourite part.”Katie, Year 12 pupil
