Last week, Year 8 pupils enjoyed a Geography field trip to Box Hill in Surrey to investigate the impact of tourism.
Box Hill is a summit of the North Downs in Surrey, approximately 31km south-west of London. The hill gets its name from the ancient box woodland found on the steepest west-facing chalk slopes overlooking the River Mole.
The pupils’ day started with an environmental impact assessment, where they collected data on litter and noise levels. After, they had a fascinating talk from the National Trust, learning about Box Hill and how the National Trust manages special areas, making them accessible for everyone while protecting the environment at the same time.
After lunch, the class carried out an experiment at Burford Spur and observed differences on and off the path and assessed the impact of people walking and trampling vegetation.
“I really enjoyed our Geography trip to Box Hill. I loved the breathtaking views looking over acres of grass and hills.” Avni, Year 8 pupil
