Bromley High School students hugely benefited from a 3-day workshop with Artist in Residence Eva Jonas. Students from Year 5 through to Year 13 planned and restaged moments or memories at locations that fostered a sense of sanctuary within the school grounds. Photos were taken from discussions and settings around the school that gave students a feeling of being seen, safe, or inspired.

Using a Mamiya RZ67 medium format camera the students visited their sanctuaries, working together to capture their memories. Their responses ranged from recreating snowball fights during snow days, performing the long jump in sports day, creating graffiti collage for the dance production, chats in the form room and more!

Eva created a zine documenting the day with a map identifying areas of sanctuary.

“I really enjoyed how inclusive the experience was and how we had an opportunity to work together. I liked that we used specialist cameras and played around the lighting, texture, and environment. We also found out what it would be like to become a professional photographer.”Workshop Student

“This was one of her best days ever in school. She said photography allows her to express herself (including her emotions) and play with objects, images, and light. She absolutely loved it!”Workshop Student Parent
