This week in assembly, Senior pupils learnt about the nine protected characteristics identified under the Equality Act 2010; highlighting the importance to treat every individual fairly, regardless of their age, race, religion, gender or sexual orientation.
Pupils discussed if current UK laws prevent discrimination and following a group vote, came to a conclusion that they do not stop it. However, discrimination can be prevented by increasing awareness through education.
“Instead of relying on the law, we should take it into our own hands to prevent and combat discrimination in our daily lives by taking action and not being a bystander.” Helena, Year 9 pupil
Additionally, girls learnt about children’s rights, including the rights to be able to ask questions in a safe space, be educated, and learn how to treat others with dignity and respect. Lastly children have the right to express their own views and opinions without judgement from others.
“This assembly made us realise how lucky we are to study in a diverse environment that doesn’t hinder people based on these characteristics.”Helena, Year 9 pupil
