Minerva guest speaker Dr Melanie Windridge visited the school last week to discuss fusion energy and its impact on our future.
Dr Melanie Windridge has a PhD in Plasma Physics (Fusion Energy) from Imperial College London where she remains an academic visitor. She is a Communications Consultant for privately funded Fusion Company Tokamak Energy and founder of Fusion Energy Insights.
Dr Melanie Winbridge started the talk by describing what fusion energy is and how it can be used as a great replacement for fossil fuels, a finite resource. With our intake of energy and electricity increasing drastically, the demand for energy is almost certainly outweighing the supply. This means that eventually, we will run out of fossil fuels and therefore the need for more efficient energy sources are greatly needed. Fusion energy is a great example of a renewable energy source that is safe, abundant and carbon-free.
“I found the talk very interesting and I feel I now know more about the importance fusion energy will have for us in the future. We also found out more about how tokamaks are being used to create this sustainable energy.”Bethell, Year 9 GCSE Physics pupil
