A group of Year 9 pupils visited the University of Greenwich this week, hearing from speakers who seamlessly fuse their passion for maths with their everyday careers.
The presentations ranged from exploring the maths of crowds, optimising your chances of winning in games, as well as asking ourselves “what makes pigs and boomerangs fly in circles?” – a fantastic lecture introducing pupils to Newton’s First Law which culminated with the chance of building their own novel cardboard boomerang.
“I found the day to be very informative and learnt a great deal, from the history of mathematics and the lives of popular mathematicians, to how maths is applied in almost everything around us. Listening to the expert panel of speakers on the day, reaffirmed my views on how mathematics shapes our day to day lives. Overall, I found the day to be a very enjoyable and educational experience.” Fifi, Year 9
“The presentations taught us about the variety of occupations open to the use of maths and how it is generally found in every day life. It was a fun trip and great experience to have been a part of.” Year 9, Giselle
